While significant strides have been made to combat the substance and alcohol epidemic in Ohio, the buckeye state continues to lead the nation in substance abuse with an estimated 700K people ages 12 and up abusing a substance annually. Additionally, the road to recovery can be paved with significant challenges for those who lack an alcohol and drug free living environment that supports sustained recovery. The Red Zone's substance abuse program offers a new path to a full recovery for individuals and their families to regain their lives.

We caught up with one of our graduates Gail Flemming, who took back her life one step at a time with the help and resources she learned from our compassionate team.

The Red Zone: What prompted you to join The Red Zone?
Gail Flemming: " I knew I wanted to stay sober, but had no funding. I was referred to The Red Zone's Intensive Outpatient, Aftercare and one-on-one counseling."

The Red Zone: What was your experience?
Gail Flemming: "Entering The Red Zone was my final chance. I knew I needed to do it, but I just didn't want to. However, in the end, it was so sweet. Even after I graduated I still keep in contact with my counselor Nikki."

The Red Zone: How did it impact you and your recovery?
Gail Flemming: "My experience at The Red Zone taught me how to listen and be accountable. The program provided me with positive feedback and coping mechanisms to deal with the challenges of life."

The Red Zone: What challenges did you face?
Gail Flemming: "I have no license, so transportation was a problem. I also had a problem accepting and adhering to authority. I gave my counselor Nikki a hard time initially, but learned to shit my mouth because I could have gotten kicked out of the program and wouldn't have reached my goal."

The Red Zone: What tips or wisdom would you give anyone who is currently beginning their road to recovery?
Gail Flemming: "I would tell them to remember that they can do it, but it won't be easy. I would suggest anyone to learn how to listen and suggestions and follow them. Praying and tapping into your higher power and you will never be alone. I would encourage people to be honest with themselves more than you ever have in your life. You should always remember to love people where they are and that you are worthy of what you desire."

The Red Zone: Describe your success since graduating from The Red Zone program?
Gail Flemming: I have earned 14 months of sobriety. I attended school for 7 weeks and earned by CDCA and even maintained employment while I have been sober. I am in a healthy relationship and recently gotten custody of my children. I've never had custody of my children. They spent the entire summer with me. I have a 5 – bedroom house. I have sponsors who I have helped through the steps of recovery.

My family life has definitely improved. My family actually wants me around. I am taking my time to to clean up the wreckage of my past one step at a time.
